Mammals

Asturias is the last place in Western Europe where brown bears still live. The number of wolves are also increasing, however both are notoriously difficult to spot. More common are wild boar, deer, pine martins and red squirrels. Chamoix (Rebeco) are also synonymous with higher regions of the Picos de Europa and very easy to spot.

Birds

There is no shortage of birdlife. From birds of prey, such as griffon vultures, which are very common and easy to see circling on thermals, Egyptian vultures, eagles, buzzards, and black kites. There is also a local program re-introducing lammergeiers (bearded vultures) to the area. Other birds include alpine choughs, woodpeckers, rock bunting, snow finches and tree creepers. Flowers

During the spring and summer months the region has especially beautiful meadows, filled with flowers such as orchids, lilies, narcissus, and woodlands of primroses and hellebores. With the flowers come a huge number of butterflies and moths.
